15 YR OLD HAND PAINTS SURFBOARD FOR OCEAN HEALTH, SAYS NO TO TEPCO DUMPING RADIOACTIVE WASTEWATER

1/14/2023 – In April 2021, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in Japan announced its plans to initiate a pipeline dump of the Fukushima radioactive waste into the Pacific Ocean. On September 22, 2022, a group of the foremost nuclear and marine scientists released an article in the Japan Times and made it clear that,

“We conclude that the present plan does not provide the assurance of safety needed for people’s health or for sound stewardship of the ocean.”

As a response, two organizations, Ocean Health Co-op and Mother Earth, began compiling global endorsements to an open letter to the Prime Minister of Japan, including many parliamentary members, Greenpeace, and Nexus Global Youth Summit.

When she heard about the issue, 15-year-old eco fashion designer Hanalei Swan said “it broke my heart, and I knew I had to do something to take action.” With the unanimous support of NGOs, political leaders, business owners, and youth, the Ocean Health Now! Campaign is focusing on stopping TEPCO and Japan from continuing their plan to dump over 100 mil tons of radioactive wastewater in the Pacific.

The ‘Mother Earth Speaks Ocean Health Now! Campaigncalls for many organizations currently focusing on plastic pollution in the ocean as well as surfers and celebrities to lend their temporary support to the Shima Swan Surfboard project based on the leading scientific recommendations for long-term human and ecosystem health. The surfboard Hanalei used as her canvas was generously donated by Ripcurl Asia. The design features the 16 native flowers of the Pacific Island Nations most affected by the dump.

The hope is to get the Presidents of these nations and other notable advocates to sign the Surfboard before the public water blessing and gifting ceremony, where the surfboard will be presented to the CEO of TEPCO and other decision-makers in Japan to relay the intergenerational effects of this decision on our children and Mother Earth.

The following organizations have endorsed the open letter to Japan to stop this illegal dump:
